Flaws and Fixes: When Climate News Reporting Investigates the Whole Story

Session Description

Join us for a lively discussion with veteran journalists who are boldly pioneering a new style of climate news reporting: Solutions Journalism. We’ll examine how solutions journalism can uncover stories about people managing challenges that arise where the built environment and natural world come together.

Through rigorous investigation, solutions journalists strive to report the whole story—flaws and fixes—to show how communities, private citizens, businesses and other groups are responding to climate and sustainability issues by addressing practical answers for households, workplaces and communities.


Why do we need a different approach? Because we’re battling news fatigue and low climate literacy.


Today 57% of Americans believe bad news tends to dim good news in green business coverage about home and building companies. Strikingly, 59% are unsure of what the industry is communicating about its sustainable practices, products and technologies, or feel it is doing a poor job.

We will look at these findings and more from the 2019 G&S Sense & Sustainability Study, the tenth annual survey which gauges public perceptions of corporate social responsibility, environmental stewardship and institutional accountability.

You will learn:

  • Principles of solutions journalism, key techniques taught in newsrooms in the U.S. and internationally, and examples of applications to climate news reporting.
  • Opportunities for journalists to work with communicators as reliable sources for solutions-oriented news.
  • Highlights of findings from the 2019 G&S Sense & Sustainability Study, which this year also focused on U.S. consumers’ views on the home and building industry’s efforts to communicate its sustainable practices, products and technologies.

Meet Our Guest Speakers

Liza Gross, Vice President, Newsroom Practice Change, Solutions Journalism Network

Liza Gross is a journalist and media leader with over three decades of experience working in executive positions at news organizations and non-profits. She has specialized in the transition of traditional news outlets to multimedia platforms, as well as in the exploration of new and transformational models for media organizations, including collaborative arrangements and innovative techniques of audience engagement. She was Managing Editor of The Miami Herald, Executive Editor of El Nuevo Día in Puerto Rico, and Publisher of Exito!, the Spanish language publication of the Chicago Tribune.

Fara Warner, Lead Instructor, Poynter College Media Project

Currently affiliated with the Poynter College Media Project, Fara Warner is an award-winning journalist and digital media expert with a passion for immersive storytelling methods. As the vice president of custom content and global content director of WSJ Custom Studios, Fara helped to build and lead the award-winning custom content studio of The Wall Street Journal. As editorial director of Aol Inc.’s Tech, Business and Entertainment Group, she oversaw editorial strategy for leading news sites including TechCrunch and created a new digital platform, This Built America, an immersive editorial project that explored the re-imagining of American manufacturing. She has taught college-level journalism and is the author of the best-selling business book, “The Power of the Purse: How Smart Companies Are Adapting to the World’s Most Important Consumers.” Fara hold a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and was a Knight-Wallace Fellow in Journalism at the University of Michigan.

Ron Loch, Managing Director and Sustainability Lead, G&S Business Communications 

A G&S veteran, Ron Loch leads the agency’s Chicago office with responsibilities for employee development, operations and business growth. He also heads the sustainability consulting team, collaborating with global Fortune 1000 companies and green business start-ups on strategic, integrated programs that add value to sustainability efforts and promote clean technologies. Ron moderates many of the firm’s thought leadership events, which have welcomed speakers from Businessweek, Burt’s Bees, Chicago Tribune, Cummins, The Economist, Time Magazine, The Sustainability Consortium, The World Food Prize Foundation, U.S. Green Building Council, U.N. Global Compact, and more. He oversees publication of the annual G&S Sense & Sustainability® Study, which gauges public perceptions of the corporate commitment to environmental and social responsibility. He was previously an adjunct professor at Kendall College in Chicago, teaching research, analytics, metrics and reporting for sustainability. Ron graduated with a B.S. in Journalism and Mass Communications from Iowa State University, received a Master’s Certificate in Managing the Sustainable Enterprise from the Illinois Institute of Technology Stuart School of Business and has also completed the certified GRI sustainability reporting curriculum.
