CHALLENGE
1 in 3 U.S. adults enter the hospital malnourished.
When Abbott Nutrition approached G&S, this staggering statistic represented a societal issue, leading to increased risk of complications, longer lengths of stay and more readmissions. On a mission to improve patient outcomes through nutrition intervention, Abbott partnered with four leading healthcare organizations: the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) to create an interdisciplinary consortium dedicated to addressing patient malnutrition.
SOLUTION
Together, we launched the Alliance to Advance Patient Nutrition.
Established the Alliance as the premier example of clinical collaboration, with 100,000 dietitians, nurses and physicians.
Created a comprehensive website to serve as the one-stop resource on hospital malnutrition, hosting research, news articles, fact sheets, case studies, videos and a toolkit for clinicians.
Leveraged five clinician spokespeople – one from each of the founding healthcare organizations – to serve as key influencers among healthcare and business media.
Provided a call-to-action for HCPs with a simple, easy-to-implement Nutrition Care Model.
Regularly communicated with each of the clinician organizations’ membership via conferences, regular e-newsletters, social media and online commentaries.
We laid the framework for hospitals nationwide.
In the first few months alone, seven hospitals implemented the Alliance’s recommended nutrition intervention protocols in their facilities.
In the first full year, 43 highly-focused news articles and 130 pieces of Alliance communications drove more than 100,000 page views and 1,000 HCP registrations on the website.
The campaign inspired a US congressman to write a letter to the CMS, requesting review of a proposed action plan to address malnutrition and citing the work of the Alliance.
